This weekend I figured out how to fix it.  I had to add the line:
keycode 22 = BackSpace 
to my Xmodmap file.  When I did a xmodmap -pke to find out if BackSpace
was even defined, It wasn't.  So I added it and all is good.  

I have Debian 2.0 (fresh off the CD).  And I did see the Xresources
information.  I tried it out but it didn't seem to do anything.  The
Xmodmap seemed to fix everything.
