When I found the 0.74 version and installed it, I had the same problem.
Don't know exactly what did it, but I started xscanimage as sudo root,
then started Gimp as sudo root, then did 'ln -s /dev/sg0 /dev/sga' and
somewhere along the line it all worked and I can now use the scanner as
a regular user!!!!
