My /etc/init.d/network is (before I added two lines):

ifconfig lo 127.0.0.1
route add -net 127.0.0.0
IPADDR=192.168.1.6
NETMASK=255.255.255.0
NETWORK=192.168.1.0
BROADCAST=192.168.1.255
GATEWAY=
- belows are same as yours -

My LAN card is 3com 3C-574 TX, PCMCIA type.
I can see the message "loading device 'eth0'...done"
at the boot time
