 hdparm -c1 -A1 -a8 -m16 -X34 -d1 -u1 -S0 /dev/hda

 These have worked for me fine in every machine I've used that has
 ide disks (about dozen).

 Please do read the hdparm options and manpage for what those are
 before trying.
