As far as I can tell, the problem is with the boot disks, as it has happened on 2 of my friends computers as well, while things like slackware/redhat/debian 1.3 all installed lilo just fine. So I guess the correct solution is to fix the boot disks. Untill that happens the best/only solution is to edit lilo.conf (as far as I know).
