I had the same problem, the error is in /etc/lilo.conf, the problem is that
the installation program puts (for my system):
boot=/dev/hda5
root=/dev/hda5

change this to:
boot=/dev/hda
root=/dev/hda5

or whatever your configuration happens to be, and then run lilo as root, it
should boot now..
