boot prompt argument problem

I have a problem installing linux on a thinkpad 340.

When I type "floppy=thinkpad" at the boot prompt, I get a response
"floppy=t.hin not known" or something similar.

The problem is , that 'floppy=thinkpad 'did work once, and so I know I am on
the right track (its just stopped working).

I have tried numerous rescue discs but always the same response.
In addition, if I try and put in another boot prompt argument, I get the same
garbled response. Is there anyway around this. I read that the lilo.config file
could be edited with boot prompt arguments..

Thanks (and to previous responses to the same question)
