RE: Multi-Boot

What you want to do has been done by others. I don't use nt and debian
together so I can't help there. There was a recent thread on the list
that covered this. In the meantime, you can use the boot floppy that you
make during the install process.

How you partition a system depends a lot on what you are going to do
with it. My system is just a local workstation and looks like this:

/dev/hda
	/	32Mb
	swap	32Mb
	/usr	550Mb
	/var	80Mb
/dev/hdb
	swap	32Mb
	/home	480Mb

You don't really have to use all those partitions (or, you can add more).
It is simpler to have swap and root only but that makes backups bigger and
a bit harder to manage. I try to make swap about 2 times memory. Other
folks use up to 4 times. YMMV. Depends on what you are going to be running.
If you want to run a bunch of news groups or a lot of uucp, then /var has
to be a lot bigger than I made mine. My /usr is probably a bit large for what
I do. It's half empty and I have X and a lot of compiler tools loaded. My
root (/) is only 28% full but /tmp is there. I also only have one or 2
system image files there.

One nice thing about separating out / into its own partition is that you can
make it first on a disk and never have to worry that the kernel image file
will extend beyond cylinder 1023. LILO chokes on that because of bios support
on older machines (maybe new ones too).

Maybe someone else out there with a bigger, more interesting, system can
add some comment...

Subject: Multi-Boot

I'm trying to set up a dual boot system with Linux & NT 4.0. My NT system
is configured like this:
.	Adaptec 2940UW
.	LUN(0)	2.1GB
100MB FAT-16 (C:)
2000MB NTFS (E:)
.	LUN(1)	3.25GB
3.25GB NTFS (D:)
.	LUN(2)	4.33GB
Unpartitioned - Reserved for Linux
.	LUN(5)	Zip Drive

I'd like to set up Linux on LUN(2) and use the NT bootloader. I've heard
that LILO must run from LUN(0) on a SCSI system in order to boot. If this
true, then I need to rebuild the system and allocate a boot partition on
LUN(0) for LILO.

I'd also appreciate any suggestions about optimal partition sizes for the
4.3GB Linux volume.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.
