Interesting data points:
Slackware and Redhat boot floppies work fine.
The same kernel that wouldn't boot from a Debian boot disk
worked fine when copied onto a DOS partition and started with
Loadlin. I'd suspect that DOS was initializing something in the
laptop if it weren't for the other boot disks working.
