2.1.XX kernel compile still not going well---ppp

For well over a year, I have experienced some kind of problem compiling the
2.1.X kernels. The kernel boots well, but ppp support isn't working
properly. I've been around and aruond with the lists on this. This has
happened on two different machines, through libc5 and libc6 libraries.
Both modular and non-modular configurations of ppp fail to work.
I'd still welcome any suggestion.

I compile alot of things ok. Mainly flawlessly. Perhaps it's something I
am not turning on in the configuration?

No, I don't use Debian kernel headers. When I do, the same thing
essentially happens.
