Help! Can not initdb first time!
I started with Debian 3. I am using Gnu's make 1.76, Linux kernel 2.0.33. Bash 2
I am tring to get PostgreSQL on my box. I am able to complie with no error.
Install says all is done, but on the next step for the install:
(the first initdb) this is what I get.
postgres:~/ initdb
initdb: error: database initialization files not found.
initdb: either gmake install has not been run or you're trying to
initdb: run this program on a machine that does not store the
initdb: database (PGHOST doesn't work for this).
I exported:
PGDATA as /usr/local/pgsql/data
PGLIB as /usr/local/pgsql/lib
and added the bin paths to my own. This, again, as stated in the install.
But there is no data directory under /usr/local/pgsql. I'm lost.
Has anyone seen this before. Please tell me the dumb mistake I am making.
any help would be greatly appreached.
