You can also use the "-s" option to ls, which can be more convenient.
And lastlog does seem pretty sparse:

% ls -ls lastlog messages
   6 -rw-r--r--   1 root     root       292292 Feb 13 16:55 lastlog
 201 -rw-r-----   1 root     adm        204740 Feb 13 17:33 messages

That's 6K versus 201K, when the first file should be half as big again.
