Pardon my ignorance - but is it possible to use the debian install
program (from the floppies) to recompile the kernel with additional
modules (e.g. PLIP) without having to reinstall the whole OS and
current file system?
No. But you can do it *without* the floppies. ;-)
I suggest you install the kernel-source and kernel-package packages,
and read their documentation.
Now that I look, it seems that plip is included in the base Debian
kernel (kernel-image-2.0.32, at lesat) as a module. Have you actually
tried using it?
