I got exactly that message when my DEPCA was not detected so that its
module wasn't inserted. When I insmoded the driver, that error message was
replaced by a transmit timeout, status 0063.

While checking things, I noticed that the "domain" line was missing from
/etc/resolv.conf, only search and nameserver being present. Is that a bug?

I still don't know how to insmod the driver after having reserved 0x300 to
prevent probing. At the moment I'm trying to install by copying the .deb
files off one machine (with a 3c509) onto a zip drive and then moving it
across to the depca one.

I noticed while doing this that the 2.0.27 kernel has PPA built in which
means that you can't (a) connect the zip drive to a running system and (b)
can't switch between lp and ppa. I liked it better in 2.0.18 as a module.
