I use a ZOOM K56X D/F (External, Data/Fax) and think its a great modem.
Apparently several magazines agree with me as well. Linux took it with no
complaints and it was pretty cheap (Iow cost not low quality). Just make sure
your phone lines will connect at 33.6+. And initialize it with 

AT&F&C1&D2S95=1
