Modules / depmod

Help,

I've been playing arround with the new 2.1.5x kernels. Now when I issue a depmod -a, it does not update the modules.dep file. Any content of the modules.dep is cleared. I've re-built the depmod / modprobe utilities (v 2.1.55) from source, but still no joy.

Can anyone suggest what I've done wrong as I'd like to return to using modules. 

I get the same result whether I use the 2.0.27 / 2.0.30 or 2.1.55 kernel. I couldn't get the modules to load correctly before I updated the depmod / modprobe utils.
