In fact, you can configure the whole thing in /etc/XF86Config.

Some lines from mine are:

Section "Screen"
    Driver      "accel"
    Device      "S3_868"
    BlankTime   15
    SuspendTime 20
    OffTime     30

Seen 'man XF86Config' for details.
