8MB is enough to run X.  I've done it before.  You should use a light
window manager such as fvwm (not fvwm2).  You should also have at least
20MB of swap, I'd say.  Otherwise, just run without X.  Of course, it's
more fun to run X with >32MB of RAM. :-)
