I have a similar problem using kernel 2.0.27 with the really odd part being that I
can play audio CDs using xplaycd. If something like saytime is run I get that /dev/audio
is busy. In the kernel readme or sound howto it talks about checking that the device isn't being
used by some other application and it is always free.
