checking that xfs is working
After a couple of rounds of multi-minute waits for fonts to load, I
discovered that xfs wasn't running. I added start-xfs to
/etc/X11/config, which now causes it to load, but I can't tell that xdm
uses it. no reference appears in the command reported by ps or top, and
/var/lib/xdm/authdir/autfiles/A:0-a00140 isn't perople-readable.
judging by the staggering delays to load lyx, which brings x to a halt,
i'd bet it isn't running. But how do i check, and how do i fix it?
