When I first started with Debian many moons ago, I had the same problem.
My only fast net access was at work behind a formidable firewall. After
tediously working my way through a couple of hundred packages (Thank God
it wasn't the 1000+ of today!) I thought there had to be a better way.
So I wrote an http method for dselect. I actually used lynx to do the
transfer because you can specify a proxy configuration in its setup.
It did work but it wasn't very polished. With Deity on its way and CDs
going for as little as $3.99, there is probably not much point but if
people think it could be useful, I don't mind starting work on it again.
