trouble installing xserver

I am having trouble installing xservers. I am attempting to install the
mach 32 server and the vga 16 server. I have an up to date Debian 1.3
system from the stable directory.

Here are my messages:

mapleloop# dpkg -i xserver-vga16_3.3-3.deb
Selecting previously deselected package xserver-vga16.
(Reading database ... 10008 files and directories currently installed.)
Unpacking xserver-vga16 (from xserver-vga16_3.3-3.deb) ...
Setting up xserver-vga16 (3.3-3) ...
Fixing tty0 and console...
Notice: changing my directory to /dev.
MAKEDEV: syntax error: Unexpected 'C', line 18, column 13 in file
/proc/devices
MAKEDEV: Sorry, can't continue.

Here is the contents of the /proc/devices file:

Any help appreciated.
