I too have been wrestling with configuration of X of late.

Did you install all the font packages? The dependency structure didn't
alert me to their necisity but the server worn't start without them. I
think it is a 'one of the set is needed' issue, but I thought I read that
Debian had a dependency mechanism to represent this situation.

Also, when you removed X, did you select to purge configuration files
(using _ instead of -) ? I had a problem with X trying to load the S3V
server and it took me forever to realize that just removing and
re-installing isn't always enough, you have to make sure the old config
files are gone also. It seems to me this is a bug in the server packages.
When removed they should not leave lines in config files packaged with
xbase (IIRC) trying to launch them.

I'm not so sure. My server runs in 1280x1024, but it looks extremely bad
(extreme flicker around edges, pixel columns are out of line, exactly the
stuff you would expect if my monitors maximum hsync of 69 kHz was too
low). If anyone knows how to fix this I"m all ears.

You might want to open up and take a look at your chip. I had the one
chip from IBM that is not detected in mine (IBM RGB 526). Good question
about what the little buggers are.

I have this problem also. I installed the packages, why are they not
being loaded? I suspect this might have somethig to do with the failure
of many apps (9wm, xmix) that complain about not being able to load
libraries in /usr/X11R6/lib that definately are there, I have checked.

Onward christian soldier. Try purging configs if you havn't done it.
Good luck.
