You should install the documentation packages and then check out the files
in /usr/doc/modules and the appropriate files in /usr/doc/HOWTO (use 
'zless filename' to view them.

In order to get connected to the net from home most likely you will use
ppp to connect.  I will not go into more detail since most of what you
need will probably be covered in the docs.

One of the easiest ways I've found to set up PPP is to get the PPP scripts
that are on uiarchive.cso.uiuc.edu.  The were set up for connecting to
U of I's servers and use the ksh shell and su1 (su1 isn't a debian
package).  As such they won't work with debian directly, however they
do provide an excellant example how PPP could be set up.

The bare bones stuff needed to get PPP going is in the base
installation.  It does not include FTP, but dselect can use the protocol
to get files.  The FTP package provides a program to act as an interface
to a human to request and send packages from computer to computer, which
is not needed by dselect.
