If you are trying to run X applications between to machines you have to 
set the display and xhost variables.  I don't know if this is your problem.
Here is how to do it...

<prompt@my.machine>xhost remote.machine
remote.machine being added to access control list

<prompt@my.machine>rsh remote.machine

<prompt@remote.machine>setenv DISPLAY my.machine:0.0

Then you will be able to run X applications from the remote machine 
having the display/interface to your X windows environment.  Hope this is
