In the beginning of my ".xsession", I do a:
xmodmap -quiet $HOME/.xmodmaprc

Here is my ".xmodmaprc":
keysym BackSpace = Delete

After adding this, my backspace and delete work everywhere... YMMV :-)

I agree that it's silly to worry about what the packaging looks like,
but I completely understand Richard's position.

A lot of people (like me) are using Linux to do real work in an environment
where the managers still think AS/400s are the greatest thing since the
Univac. They have an unconcealed disdain for anything that isn't made by
IBM or costs less than a million dollars. Convincing them that Linux would
be the ideal network firewall is a real sales job, and nice "commercial"
looking packaging helps.

Regards...
          ... Ami.
