shadow passwd?

	is there a shadow passwd system available for Debian 1.1?
a "strings /lib/libc.so.5.2.18 | grep shadow" gives me ...
/etc/gshadow
/etc/shadow
@(#)gshadow.c       1.1     12:22:51        13 Feb 1994 (GNU Shadow Library Suite)
@(#)shadow.c        1.1     12:23:06        13 Feb 1994 (GNU Shadow Library Suite)
... which makes me wonder if the code is a part of libc, but I need to 
tell the system to use the shadow file for calls like getpwent(3) (somehow).
	any ideas?
