Are you sure that the user that you are trying to log in as has a correct
.xsession file?  If there's no .xsession then the default Xsession file
will be used, which should work. If there is a .xsession file, make sure

a) it's executable
b) it doesn't 'drop off the end' of the script during the session

The usual thing to do is to exec the window manager at the end of the
.xsession file; the session will then end when the window manager
terminates.
