annoying terminal problem 2nd try

 I've had a similar thing occur - where only the top half of my screen
works.  It scrolls from the middle of the screen upwards.  Nothing
seems to fix it except rebooting.  I use vidmode 7, which is 132x43.
I don't know whether it does that in 80x25.  I've always had that
happen on tty2; I've never noticed it on any of the other virtual
consoles.  I seem to remember that it happens after running 'top'.
 This is Slackware, kernel 1.2.13...  It's been a while since I've
used the console; I've got enough RAM to run X all the time now, so I
do.
