pppd won't compile :-(

     Hi all,
     I'm having a hard time trying to compile pppd. I got the sources
from ftp.debian.org, unpacked it and ran ./debian.rules binary. First I
got some errors regarding a few paths (some includes couldn't be found).
Now I get a lot of errors during compilation of "sys-linux.c"; warnings,
parse errors, undefined functions, etc. (oh, I did run ./configure also).
     What am I doing wrong? I need to
compile this in order to apply a patch that allows RADIUS authentication
together with PAP. The errors show even if I don't apply the patch. I
guess I'm probably doing something very wrong here, just don't know what... BTW,
I got the source from the stable tree, and I'm using Debian 0.93R6.
