help adding machine to network

If I want to add another Linux machine to my network, and have it so
that if users log onto it, or the existing Linux machine on the
network, things will be the same (i.e. access the same e-mail, have
the same home directory and password, etc.), what are the steps to do
this?

Perhaps there are several options? Can I just NFS mount the root
filesystem of the existing Linux box? Or, is it better to maintain a
root filesystem on the new machine and just NFS the /home directory
structure and the /var/spool/mail directory? I guess I would then
need to run NIS to maintain consistent passwd files on both systems.
How hard is this to setup? Any advice or pointers is greatly
appreciated.

Thanks,
