Dselect problem

I installed debian on my (previously slackware) box last night. The experience
whent somewhat like this:

boot disk okay, root disk okay, partition stuff okay, make a boot floppy okay,
install base disks okay, reboot okay, run dselect...uhoh

I installed the latest dpkg package I could find (0.93.70?) and then when I
typed 'dselect' I got:

for pages and pages...

what is this? what did I do wrong? I was on the console, my TERM variable was set up right...

I finally ended up going through all the packages by hand and installing the ones I wanted.

are complaints/problems with package installtion suitable here?

the sendmail package didn't install at *all* correctly and the defaults for all the
included macros are, as far as paths are concerned, all botched up. I ended up installing
smail instead

texpect depends on tk for expecttk, but I don't have X and therefore not tk, but I want expect for scripts, so I hadda manuallly tell it to ignore that depends... should expect and expectk be
separate packages?

the version of lynx that's packaged up is not the latest version (it's 2.3.7, latest is 2.4.2, at least)

Also, there's no packages for lots of popular stuff (Apache, NCSA httpd, etc) so where is
doccon on how to make things into packages, and should it be the writer of the software that
does the packaging or is it possible for me to package up stuff I want for easier installation/
deinstallation?

Finally, is there any decent docco on the init.d system? why was it chosen over the old
rc.local & etc. system?
