I get the syslogd: loose cannon message also.
CPU time gets sucked up big time when this happens.

also, the /var/spool/cron/crontabs/root file has a commenting 
error: the whatis database is updated on MONDAY mornings not sunday
mornings. this is relatively minor. I was just rather surprised to 
see my cpu thrashing away during a time I thought nothing was scheduled.
