Pessoal acho que resolvi o problema da mensagem:
'Error mounting: mount exited with exit code 1: helper failed with...'

Notei que isso ocorre ao instalar o Debian via pendrive, pois é criado uma
entrada em /etc/fstab, como esta no meu caso:
/dev/sdb1       /media/usb0     auto    rw,user,noauto  0       0

Após comentar a linha e reiniciar não tive mais problemas pra montar meu
hd-externo em NTFS.

Não sei o que mudou no Debian, mas desde o Squeeze eu coloco um HD externo 

formatado em NTFS e aparece esse erro:

Error mounting: mount exited with exit code 1: helper failed with:

Mount is denied because setuid and setgid root ntfs-3g is insecure with the

external FUSE library. Either remove the setuid/setgid bit from the binary

or rebuild NTFS-3G with integrated FUSE support and make it setuid root.

obs: meu usuário já está no grupo 'fuse'.
