Olá!

De posse destas informações, você poderia: 

1 - atualizar o seu kernel. O lenny possui uma versão mais nova do que a que 
você está usando. 

2 - Voltar a usar o kernel e sistema i386 ao invés do amd64. Especialmente se 
o hardware era o mesmo que você tinha instalado o debian antes de passar para 
a versão mais atual. Hardware muito  "novo"  não costuma se dar muito bem com 
kernel antigo. Pense nisso.  

3 - Procurar uma solução atual para o seu problema antigo (considerar que 
hostap é muito mais flexivel e fácil de se implementar que madwifi, o qual se 
tornou obsoleto. Debian lenny é versão estável obsoleta. O site do madwifi não 
tem uma update desde... mais de 5 anos atrás. Projeto abandonado).

4 - considerar que o seu hardware pode ter  chegado ao final da vida util dele, 
se tiver mais que 3 anos. Experimente colocar esta placa wifi em outro 
computador, e ver se  o problema persiste. E colocar uma outra placa wifi no 
seu computador, para ver se o problema talvez seja com ele.
