oe! isso deve ser por dois problemas:

No arquivo   'arch/i386/mm/init.c' , do fonte do kernel, inclua a linha 44:

EXPORT_SYMBOL(__VMALLOC_RESERVE);

Ficara' assim:

43: unsigned int __VMALLOC_RESERVE = 128 << 20;
44: EXPORT_SYMBOL(__VMALLOC_RESERVE)

2) o segundo problema e' que o kernel _e_ o modulo da nvidia
*tem* que ser compilados com a mesma versao do gcc. como
normalmente a gente tem mais de um gcc instalado, procure por uma mensagem minha 
que trata disso.
3) vc ja' instalou o kernel-image? instale o kernel-source correspondente, faca a alteracao 1) e 2) copie o arquivo de configuracao do kernel-image (ele esta' em /boot e chame-se "config-alguma_coisa" ) pro diretorio raiz do kernel-source que deve estar em /usr/src/linux/ (se nao estiver, crie o link simbolico para ele) e entao no make menuconfig ou make xconfig carregue esse arquivo de configuracao, saia, salve e compile o kernel 
com  o kernel package. reinice e instale com o installer da nvidia. :-)

continuo com o mesmo problema instalei o "kernel-image-2.6.10-1-k7" e toda vez que tento instalar o drive da nvidia que peguei no site oficial, o mais atual 
"NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-7167-pkg1-custom.run"
nao consigo executar a instalacao , pois o instalador me retorna um erro classico. O mesmo nao acontece com o "kernel-image-2.4.27-2-k7" que uso pra escrever este e-mail, com o drive da nvidia instalado de forma devida e sem problemas, o processo eh o mesmo e nao consigo o mesmo resultado que eh o X funcionando com o drive oficial.
E pra tirar a prova tentei com outro kernel, mas especificamente o kernel-image-2.6.8-2-k7 e tive o mesmo problema.
A novidade eh que vou colocar aqui o erro que retorna e quem puder me ajudar eu fico realmente muito agradecido, 
conteudo retirado do /var/log/nvidia-installer.log
