Bei mir funktioniert es einwandfrei. Auszug aus meiner ~/.muttrc:
set preconnect="ssh -f -q -L 8090:127.0.0.1:143 user@uni sleep 120 < /dev/null > /dev/null 2>&1"
mailboxes {127.0.0.1:8090}/home/user/Mail/debian
set mail_check=10
Am besten Du kopierst Deinen Public-key in die Datei authorized_keys des
Uni-Rechners. Dann spart man sich die lästige Passwort-Eingabe...
