[Debian] XFree4.1.0.1 mit gdm/xdm

Ich habe ein etwas skuriles Problem mit XFree 4.1.0.1 in der
Zusammenarbeit mit gdm und xdm.
Ich kann als root mit startx (/usr/bin/gnome-session) X starten und
arbeiten. Will ich aber nicht.
gdm startet den XServer, schaltet ihn aber sofort wieder ab. Das Spiel
wiederholt sich, bis man remote /etc/init.d/gdm stop ausführt.
In /var/log/gdm/:0.log steht dabei dann das unten anhängende - meiner
Meinung taucht dort nix auf, was das Problem erklärt, der Fehler beim
Laden von hal

erscheint mir irrelevant, da das X ja ohne gdm problemlos startet.
Ich vermutete ein Problem mit gdm 2.0.0.beta4 und probierte xdm.
Bei xdm bekomme ich den Greeter, bei dem Versuch, mich einzuloggen
(egal als welcher User) bekomme ich im Authlog:

Ohne xdm ist es als User möglich, ein blankes X zu starten, mehr aber
nicht (xterm oder so).
Ich vermute ein Authentifizierungs-Problem, finde aber in
/usr/share/doc/[xdm|xfree-common|xserver-common|xserver-xfree86] nicht
den passenden Punkt, um mit dem Lesen zu beginnen.
Der Rechner ist ein Diskless-Client, es laufen aber XServer und
XClient lokal. Grafikhardware ist eine Matrox G450, aber das steht ja
unten und ist mE irrelevant. Der Monitor ist ein CTX PR960F und kann
30-110 kHz horizontal und 50-160 Hz vertikal bei bis zu 1600x1200, die
nutze ich aber idR nicht.
