If you don't need such special characters very often you can enable the
"compose" feature in your US keytable. My /etc/kbd/default.map.gz contains
the following definitions:
keycode 52 = period colon VoidSymbol Compose
compose '"' 'a' to 'ä'
compose '"' 'A' to 'Ä'
compose '"' 'O' to 'Ö'
compose '"' 'o' to 'ö'
compose '"' 'U' to 'Ü'
compose '"' 'u' to 'ü'
compose 's' 'z' to 'ß'
compose 's' 's' to 'ß'
compose 'S' 'S' to '§'
For the US keytable the first line should probably be:
keycode 52 = period greater VoidSymbol Compose
With these entries you can enter the special characters by pressing
the <Control> key and the '.' (period) key at the same time followed
by "a for 'ä', "U for 'Ü' and so on.
I've add my complete list of compose entries (incl. entries for other
languages/characters) at the end of this mail (just add them along with
your keycode definition for the compose key to your keymap).
