OK, latest status report.

I have UltraPenguin system partially converted to Debian. I built things
like dpkg, dbuild, fileutils, debhelper and the like and installed them, and
then started running dbuild on entire directories. The results are
promising- 85% of base builds cleanly, and a not insignificant portion of
devel and net. Admin is scheduled for tonight. I think these are the most
important 4 dirs, so I went for them first.

Wichert is setting up rsync on one of the xia's so we can have a source
mirror there and unleash people on the packages. James Troup is going to
set up his autobuild scripts on xia03 so we should be able to crank through
the easy packages and see ones with real problems soon. I've filed a bug to
get a binary-sparc64 directory created for anything we build as we don't
want to pollute the sparc sources.

Currently I've taken a clean partition on the ultra I have at home and
copied the Penguin system over, and am just 'dpkg --extract *.deb /'ing
almost any debs that build onto it, with periodic reboots to ensure that
nothing is getting hosed. I'm actually running off that partition now.

Next for me is getting dpkg -i to work (meaning I have lots of dependencies
to work out, and packages to build for them- any suggestions on doing this
easily?), and getting apt to compile (haven't tried it yet- it's trying to
autobuild right now) so people can autoget stuff out of the binary-sparc64
repository.

There's real progress being made, and I think soon we can let more
developers onto xia03 to help pound away at package build failures.

WooHoo!
Nils.
