THis is NOT what should happen!!! The respective engine should be
pdftex. It seems that your system is deeply hosed.
Please send me the status (installed or not, version) of
- tex-common
- texlive-common
and tell me:
- do you have ~/.texmf-var or ~/.texmf-config with files in it?
- which files with md5sums do you have in /etc/texmf/fmt.d/

Wrong fmtutil calls:
> fmtutil: running `tex -ini -jobname=latex -progname=latex latex.ini' ...
> fmtutil: running `etex -ini -jobname=latex -progname=latex *latex.ini' ...
> fmtutil: running `etex -ini -jobname=etex -progname=etex *etex.ini' ...
> fmtutil: running `pdftex -ini -jobname=pdflatex -progname=pdflatex pdflatex.ini' ...
> fmtutil: running `pdfetex -ini -jobname=pdflatex -progname=pdflatex *pdflatex.ini' ...
Aehmmm... why these two??? we only want pdflatex once, same with normal
latex.
etc etc etc...
