This far I got, too.

The other instances of \DeclareFontShape don't point to a font? Like
\DeclareFontShape{OMS}{pplcm}{l}{n}{<->ssub * pplcm/m/n}{}
Is this just a declaration to substitute pplcm/l/n with pplcm/m/n?
