I cannot reproduce this here, or maybe the error description isn't
detailed enough.  If I start texdoctk from the command line, I get a Tk
window and can access the categories, and when selecting a document it
is displayed correctly in its associated viewer.  I can also use the
search button and access documents that way.

What exactly did you do?
