I /think/ this is the right place, and I /think/ ucf will do the right
thing in postinst, ie, /etc/texmf/fmt.d/01tetex.cnf will be replaced
with the new file without questions if it hasn't been modified. The
install scripts etc for tetex aren't easy to understand, though.

dash seems to support these multiline echo, so it should be ok wrt to
POSIX. I find statements like 

      cat > $sharedir/$package/01tetex.cnf <<EOF

# to play around with this file if you do not know what you are doing!

more readable, though. I don't know what the others think.
