pdflatex: strange error when including png images

Hi,

I do get a strange error message when I run pdflatex and it includes certain
png images.

<use mmc-appl-literaturdb-gray.png>
<mmc-appl-mmc-gray.png, id=2162, 715.3918pt x 529.4563pt>
<use mmc-appl-mmc-gray.png>
<mmc-appl-slides-gray.png, id=2163, 715.3918pt x 529.4563pt>
<use mmc-appl-slides-gray.png> [33 <./mmc-admin-edit.png>pdflatex:
xfopen.c:43: xfclose: Assertion `f' failed.
Abgebrochen

steinm@ibook:~$ file mmc-admin-edit.png
mmc-admin-edit.png: PNG image data, 881 x 674, 8-bit/color RGB, non-interlaced

steinm@ibook:~$ file mmc-appl-fotoalbum-gray.png
mmc-appl-fotoalbum-gray.png: PNG image data, 881 x 674, 8-bit/color RGB, non-interlaced

Looks like the images are quite similar in terms of its format.

I can't tell if this is related to pdflatex at all or caused by some
library used by pdflatex. Maybe somebody else can explain this
behaviour.
