I'd write something here that indicates that this doesn't mean that
the code has been forked, but rather that texlive took it from
texinfo upstream (or Karl pushed it to texlive), and you sliced it
out of the big source tarball.

If you hit y once, then it will put a changed de.gmo into the diff.gz
(at least it will try, I haven't tested, and it probably fails because
at least diff thinks its a binary file). After that, subsequent
builds run without problems.
This points to an upstream problem, but perhaps removing stamp-po is
the easy way to fix it. If you didn't encounter it previously, maybe
it's because I'm using fakeroot?
- why are the files moved from /usr/share/texmf/tex/texinfo to its
subdirectory base, in debian/rules?
I've also compared the debs with debdiff, the changes are only those
intended to fix bugs.
