Seems that the problem is that a buggy /etc/texmf/texmf.cnf was
created that did not include VARTEXMF in the search paths. I cannot
understand why, since it had date of today around noon, when I did the
upgrade and I surely did not edit it. Purging and reinstalling
tetex-bin made everything work again.
Anyway, I am enclosing the result of that set of commands just FYI.
I am downgrading the severity, since now things are by far not that
severe.
