Are you sure that this is really a backup of the system just after the
problem occured? Both error messages from the bug report ("No usable
entries" and "fmtutil.cnf" not found) shouldn't occur with this setup.
Can you compare ftmtuil.cnf and texmf.cnf with the files from the
tetex-bin deb in the apt cache?
Does anybody have the sources for the versions of tetex-extra and
tetex-bin at that time? They're not in the CVS, and of course not in any
release.
