That was what I meant, yes ... I also had assumed that xterm and xmessage
were in the same Xclients package, but apparently they aren't. So you
could try xmessage first, then xterm -e "/bin/echo ...", then stderr.
(Does one also need to check for whether X is running at all?)
As for Hilmar's suggestion of writing a small X program - wouldn't that
also depend on Xlib/Xt and whatever toolkit you chose to write the
program in?
