On my working system, which is woody with lots of backports, including
current tetex, I have the same problem. X packages are
4.2.1-3.bunk.8. In a sid chroot (nearly up-to-date), the problem does
not occur.

I don't feel comfortable to simply attribute it to the backports
mixture. Julian, which environment do you have?
